How this calculator works

How to use this calculator

Enter the project area length and width in feet, then enter tile length and width in inches. Add a waste allowance to estimate the number of tiles needed.

Formula used

Project Area = Area Length × Area Width. Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width ÷ 144. Tiles Needed = Project Area ÷ Tile Area × (1 + Waste %), rounded up.

Example calculation

A 10 ft by 8 ft area is 80 sq ft. A 12 in by 12 in tile covers 1 sq ft. With 10% waste, you need 88 tiles.

What the result means

The tile count estimates how many whole tiles to buy, including extra for cuts, breakage, and layout adjustments.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide tile area by 144?

There are 144 square inches in one square foot.

Should I include waste?

Yes. Tile projects usually need extra material for cuts and breakage.

Does this include grout spacing?

No. This is a practical material estimate and does not calculate grout spacing effects.
