How this calculator works

How to use this calculator

1. Choose your sex.
2. Enter your age.
3. Enter your weight.
4. Enter your height.
5. Click Calculate BMR to estimate your daily resting calorie needs.

Formula used

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.

Men:
BMR = 10 × weight kg + 6.25 × height cm − 5 × age + 5

Women:
BMR = 10 × weight kg + 6.25 × height cm − 5 × age − 161

Example calculation

Example: male, 30 years old, 70 kg, 170 cm

BMR = 10 × 70 + 6.25 × 170 − 5 × 30 + 5
BMR = 700 + 1062.5 − 150 + 5
BMR = 1617.5

Estimated BMR = about 1,618 calories per day.

What the result means

Your BMR is an estimate of how many calories your body uses at rest for essential functions such as breathing, circulation, and temperature regulation.

BMR is not the same as total daily calorie needs. To estimate maintenance calories, use a TDEE Calculator that includes activity level.

Frequently asked questions

What does BMR mean?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It estimates how many calories your body uses while resting.

Is BMR the same as TDEE?

No. BMR estimates resting calorie needs. TDEE estimates total daily calorie needs after activity is included.

Why does age affect BMR?

BMR often changes with age because body composition and metabolism can change over time.

Is this result exact?

No. BMR formulas are estimates. Actual calorie needs vary by body composition, activity, sleep, health, and other factors.
