Formula used
This calculator uses the Devine formula.
Men:
Ideal Body Weight kg = 50 + 2.3 × inches over 5 feet
Women:
Ideal Body Weight kg = 45.5 + 2.3 × inches over 5 feet
Inches over 5 feet = total height in inches − 60
Example calculation
Example: male, 5 feet 10 inches
Total height = 70 inches
Inches over 5 feet = 70 − 60 = 10
Ideal Body Weight = 50 + 2.3 × 10
Ideal Body Weight = 50 + 23
Ideal Body Weight = 73 kg
What the result means
Ideal weight formulas provide a simple height-based estimate. They do not measure body fat, muscle mass, waist size, health history, or fitness level.
Use the result as a general reference only. For a more complete picture, compare it with BMI, body fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio, and personal health goals.
Frequently asked questions
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not always. Ideal weight formulas are simple estimates and do not account for body composition.
Why does the formula use height only?
The Devine formula is a height-based estimate. It was originally developed for clinical reference, not as a complete personal health target.
Can athletes use this calculator?
Athletes may have higher muscle mass, so a simple ideal-weight formula may underestimate a reasonable body weight.
Should I aim exactly for this number?
No. Treat the result as a reference point, not a strict target.
