Mulch Calculator
Estimate mulch volume needed in cubic feet, cubic yards, and bags.
How this calculator works
How to use this calculator
Enter the area length and width in feet, then enter the desired mulch depth in inches. Optionally enter the bag size in cubic feet to estimate how many bags to buy.
Formula used
Mulch Volume = Length × Width × Depth. Depth in inches is converted to feet by dividing by 12. Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27.
Example calculation
A 20 ft by 10 ft area with 3 inches of mulch needs 50 cubic feet, or 1.85 cubic yards. If each bag is 2 cubic feet, you need 25 bags.
What the result means
The result estimates mulch volume for a rectangular garden bed or landscape area.
Frequently asked questions
What mulch depth should I use?
Many landscape projects use 2 to 4 inches, but the right depth depends on the project.
Why calculate cubic yards?
Bulk mulch is often sold by the cubic yard.
Can I use this for soil or compost?
Yes, for simple rectangular areas, the volume calculation is similar.
