How this calculator works

How to use this calculator

Enter the room length and width, then add a waste allowance percentage. Optionally enter the square feet covered by one flooring box to estimate how many boxes to buy.

Formula used

Room Area = Length × Width. Flooring Needed = Room Area × (1 + Waste %). Boxes Needed = Flooring Needed ÷ Box Coverage, rounded up.

Example calculation

A 12 ft by 10 ft room has an area of 120 sq ft. With 10% waste, flooring needed is 132 sq ft. If each box covers 24 sq ft, you need 6 boxes.

What the result means

The result estimates total flooring material needed including waste for cuts, mistakes, and matching patterns.

Frequently asked questions

What waste percentage should I use?

Many projects use 5% to 15%, depending on room shape, material type, and pattern.

Why round boxes up?

You usually cannot buy part of a flooring box, so the calculator rounds up.

Does this include multiple rooms?

Add the area of each room together, then enter the total as one project or calculate each room separately.
